My name is Patty Springstead. I grew up in Keyport, NJ. I was employed as an Environmental Land Use Planner and Graphic Artist for ten years prior to moving to Manahawkin, NJ in 1995. I have two children, Lauren who is a freshman at Caldwell University majoring in Art Therapy and David, a freshman at Southern Regional High School. I am married to Wayne and 2016 marks our 20th anniversary. I enjoy gardening, cooking, reading, travelling (when I get the chance), my cats, the Green Bay Packers and spending time with my family. I am a Red Cross Volunteer responsible for organizing local blood drives. I also participate in holiday gift drives in conjunction with our local Beach Haven Moose Lodge 1575. I am a parishioner of St. Francis Assisi in Brant Beach, NJ where the entire family looks forward to volunteering at the Festival of the Sea every summer!

I have been involved with David’s Dream & Believe Cancer Foundation since April 2013. While we were busy recovering from a Superstorm Sandy damaged home, my husband Wayne was diagnosed with multiple Myeloma. This is a blood cancer that causes amongst a few things: skeletal fractures, lesions, kidney damage, anemia, neuropathy and fatigue. A mutual friend of mine and David’s, Melissa Menig Henderson, spoke to David about our situation and the Foundation helped us out while we reorganized our recovery efforts and concentrated on Wayne’s treatment. After ongoing chemotherapy, radiation and various other treatments and medications, Wayne underwent a stem-cell transplant in October of 2013 at University of Pennsylvania hospital. The transplant was successful in bringing Wayne’s cancer numbers down. Multiple Myeloma has no cure. He remains on bi-weekly low dose chemotherapy and oral medications in an attempt to maintain his disease. Throughout this process we have worked together with endurance, patience, humor and love to keep it together as a family during this difficult process. It has been a long, enlightening continuing caregiving journey.

We continue to be active with DDBCF and Lauren and David were amongst the first group of kids involved in the Generation Dream youth group. I look forward to the many great things ahead and working with DDBCF and the wonderful families that we consider it an honor and privilege to help!
