My name is Jennifer Hornik and originally from northern New Jersey, I relocated to Ocean County after getting married in March of 2011. My husband and I moved here to be closer to our parents and raise our family. Our children are now 4 & 6. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2015. As many other people who have been diagnosed with cancer can say, that day my world changed. The unknown is so scary. I never had so many questions swirling around in my head. So many decisions to be made quickly, seemingly putting your life in other’s hands. I underwent 3 surgeries and 5 months of chemotherapy and I am now cancer free for 2 years. I have a mutation to the BRCA1 gene and had a triple negative breast cancer. I am fortunate enough to have an amazing family and friends, some of which I didn’t even know I had, who stood by my side as I went through treatment for cancer. There were times I thought it would never get better and my life would never be back to “normal.” I wanted to get through my treatment and then never talk about it again! Once my hair started growing back and I started feeling better and better my mind changed. I want to be here for anyone else who may be facing this diagnosis & treatment or who is currently undergoing treatment, as well as for the survivors. Being a survivor is very scary too and we need to be here for each other. There were people along my journey that helped tremendously, probably without even realizing it. I have a support group that continues to grow each day as I live life. I want to be that support & source of love and comfort for others. My way of thanking all who have been there for me as well as to continue to heal myself is to help anyone who needs me. I thank David and this foundation for this amazing opportunity.
